ALOPECIA TOTALIS
Alopecia totalis is a form of alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to mistakenly attack the hair follicles. This results in the complete loss of hair on the scalp, including the hair on the head, eyebrows and eyelashes in some cases.
Alopecia totalis can develop gradually or progress from patchy hair loss associated with alopecia areata. It can affect people of any age, gender or background, and the course of the condition varies from person to person. Hair regrowth may occur, but it can be difficult to predict.

MALE & FEMALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS
Male and female pattern hair loss are common forms of hair loss that can affect both appearance and confidence. Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL) are often influenced by genetics and hormonal factors, although the causes and patterns can vary from person to person.
Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) typically affects the front and top of the scalp. It often begins with a receding hairline or thinning around the temples, followed by hair loss at the crown. Over time, the thinning may become more noticeable.
Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) usually presents as gradual thinning across the top of the scalp, often with a widening parting. The hairline at the front is generally maintained, although individual experiences can differ.
In men, genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone, plays a significant role in the gradual shrinking of hair follicles. Female pattern hair loss is more complex, and although genetics and hormonal influences are thought to contribute, the underlying causes are not yet fully understood.

CHEMOTHERAPY AND RADIOTHERAPY
For many people diagnosed with cancer, the possibility of losing their hair is one of the most distressing side effects to face. Hair can be closely connected to our identity, confidence and sense of self, so experiencing hair loss during cancer treatment can be an emotional and challenging journey.
Chemotherapy and hair loss
Some chemotherapy drugs cause hair loss by affecting rapidly dividing cells, including the cells responsible for hair growth. Depending on the medication and treatment plan, hair may become thinner or fall out partially or completely. Hair loss can affect the scalp and other areas of the body.
In many cases, hair begins to regrow within weeks to months after chemotherapy ends, although the timing varies from person to person. New hair may initially grow back with a different colour, texture or thickness. Some people experience what is commonly known as chemo curls, when their regrowing hair develops a curl or wave that wasn’t there before.
Radiotherapy and hair loss
Radiotherapy can also cause hair loss, usually in the area being treated. The extent and duration of hair loss depend on factors such as the treatment dose, frequency and location. When the scalp is treated, hair may grow back over time, although regrowth can be incomplete or permanent following higher doses of radiation.

TRICHOTILLOMANIA (TTM)
The most common age of onset is from age 9-13. It is known as an Impulse control disorder that causes overwhelming urges to pull out your hair. Urges amost frequently affects the scalp and facial areas, including the eyebrows and eyelashes. For some people, pulling may be triggered by anxiety, tension or stress, while others may find it provides a sense of relief, comfort or emotional regulation. It can also become a repetitive, self-stimulating behaviour, sometimes referred to as stimming
Hair loss caused by trichotillomania can have an emotional impact, sometimes affecting self-esteem, confidence and how comfortable a person feels about their appearance. Some people can also feel a sense of shame or try to hide the condition.

FRONTAL FIBROSING ALOPECIA
Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a form of scarring hair loss that typically causes gradual, progressive recession of the hairline at the front and sides of the scalp. It can also affect the eyebrows and other areas of the body.
FFA is considered a variant of lichen planopilaris, an inflammatory condition that affects the hair follicles. The inflammation can damage the follicles and lead to permanent hair loss in the affected areas. Although it is most commonly reported in post-menopausal women, it can also affect women before menopause and men.
As frontal fibrosing alopecia can progress over time, seeking advice from a GP or dermatologist is important for assessment and appropriate management.

Appointments at Beyond Belief Hair are generally required to be booked in advance due to high demand. I recommend booking early to secure your preferred date and time.
Colour Appointments: All colour services require a skin allergy test at least 48 hours before your appointment, along with a completed consultation form. The relevant form will be sent to your contact number ahead of your visit.
Late-Night Appointments: These are particularly popular and typically book up 3–4 weeks in advance, so early booking is recommended.
